Robert asks…

Today I traded in a 03 Durango 52,000 mi w/3rd row seats for $6125 for a 05 Ford 500 w/27,900 mi for $14,700?

Could you tell me if I was ripped off? The Ford Five Hundred SEL has a 6 cyl, driver airbag, cloth seats, is front wheel drive, a 6 cd changer and is automatic. My Durango that I traded in had 4 wheel drive, single cd player, p/w, power seats, 3rd row, roof rack and was an 8 cyl. Also still had factory warranty and one year left on my standard used car dealership warranty. I have 3 days to return it. Was suckered in quickly… Paid $16,000 for the 03 Durango two years ago. Paid $14,700 for the Ford Five Hundred today and only rec’d $6,000 for trade in. Dealer told me that was the Kelley Blue book value but it doesn’t appear that way. Started the price for the Ford 500 at $18,995 and let me negotiate from there. Please advise asap so that I can ret’n if need be. Reason for trade and purchase is low mpg on Durango. They told me I’d get about 20 mpg with Ford 500. Any idea if that’s accurate?

admin answers:

Go to the site below and get the dealer retail for the Ford 500 and the trade-in value for your Durango. Subtract the trade-in from the dealer retail and that is about the cost you should expect to pay before adding state taxes and fees.

The 20 mpg for the 500 is a little low. Consumer Reports reports about 21. I usually get between 22-24 but it depends upon the amount of Interstate vs city driving. Highway is 26-27.

You should do your research before you buy. You’re lucky to have 3 days to change your mind.

Ken asks…

what’s a reasonable price to ask for these used vehicles? NO I’m not trying to dump one cause of gas prices…

I could afford gas just fine if I wasn’t spending over $1,000/mo on payments & insurance! my ex left me stuck with both so I need to get rid of one. my problem is I’m upside down on both loans and with gas prices like they are no one wants to buy anything larger than 4 cylinders (both are V6). the only reason they have so many miles on them is they each had ~20k miles when I bought them used from the dealership. anyway, I have:

2005 Ford Explorer XLT, sunroof, 3rd row seat, towing pkg, satellite radio, 6 CD in dash player/changer, roof rack, leather interior, running boards, power driver seat, 4×4, flex fuel, ~62k mi

2006 Chrysler 300 Touring, leather interior, heated seats, dual power seats, alloy wheels, ~50k mi

Blue Book says: $13k for Explorer (owe $15k), $14k for Chrysler (owe $22k)

been telling people I want $12 for Explorer but no takers yet. I don’t want to lose to much $ so I’d rather sell that than the car. what do you think would be reasonable to ask for each?

admin answers:

I think you are using the best source to determine the price. I usually use KBB.com less about 10%. So a 13,000 KBB.com price means I would list it for $11,700. $12,000 is close enough.

Good Price? a 1998 Subaru Forester, 58K miles, great condition – all for $6,500?

more info: Green 98 Subaru Forester L, 58741 original miles, 4 cylinder 2.5 engine, automatic, roof rack, all wheel drive, factory AM/FM/Cassette stereo, cruise control, fully loaded, cold A/C, dual front airbags, all power, factory alarm, new tires , registered until April 2011, smogged, non smoker.

Let me know if this sounds like a good deal, my current 2002 forester (from new england) i did not take great care of :( , it’s at 92K miles and needs work, so I’d rather put it into a california car with lower miles.

admin answers:

You have just described my car, with a hundred thousand fewer miles on it.

Mine is worth $3500 or less. I would offer $5,000 if the body is still in good shape, but have it checked out mechanically before you buy.

2001 ford explorer lights?

i wanted to know if i should get KC lights on the roof like get a Carr roof mounted rack and then put KC lights on that because that is a gutter mounted thing and it would fit in there or should i put 2 KC on my grill ?

if i do put it on the roof how do you run those wires and what would be the cost to have a car place do it for me like run the wires and the stitches

admin answers:

You would have to run the wires under the head liner then down behind the panel that’s running between your door and windshield it’s really not all that hard to do , just need to take your time not to screw anything up, i think your looking at around 200 to 300 hundred dollars to have it done.

BMW 1 series good car choice?

Would the BMW 1 series coupe be a good choice for a high school student who will then take it to college. Also, would a surfboard be able to be carried on the roof with a removable surf rack (one of those racks made of rope-like material and pads that can be used on a sedan)?

admin answers:

I’m not too impressed with the 1-Series. It seems really overpriced given its size and features. You could get a pre-owned 3-Series for about the same price.
