Lisa asks…

What is the best way to carry a bicycle in your car?

If you want to carry your bicycle to places like the park, what is the best way?

Roof racks are expensive and you have to drill holes in your car. I thought trunk racks are the answer, but I keep hearing that they put scratches and dents in your car.

So I think the best way is to remove the front wheel and put it in the backseat. I just have to buy a bicycle with an easily removable front wheel, so I don’t have to use a wrench. And I have to get plastic sheet covering, so there won’t be dirt and grease stains on the backseat.

Anyone know a better way?

Saris Bones 2 is my choice. They are a solidly engendered product. To avoid any trunk lid damage, all you have to do is put a wash rag or towel over the surface before you put down the rack.

The minor damage of a micro scratch is nothing compared to the damage of a grease stain on the interior, or a tear of the leather that comes with moving the bike in and out of the car.

The other rack, a hitch type, would work. But that type of rack is heavy and really cumbersome in storage.

I had similar concerns as do you. I have been very pleased with the Saris Bones 2 rack. It is really great when not in use. It is light, and will fold flat for garage OR trunk storage.

How Can I tie Skis and Snowboard to my Car?

I have a basic sport ‘rack’ on my car. It does not clip onto anything, it is just 2 handle bars down the roof that look like they can hold something tied.

Bungie Cord?

Thanks very much.

Honda Civic roof rack?

How do I go about putting a roof rack onto my ’94 Honda Civic? I am not particularly interested in carrying anything, I just would like to add a nice touch to the appearance of the car.

I don’t own a roof rack, so I would need to get one. Did Honda make one that was fairly common, that would have been installed on one which is currently in a junkyard, or do I need to get an aftermarket rack?

Thanks!

I checked with two online retailers of Honda accessories (handa and College Hills Honda) Neither went back as far as 1994. I would suggest looking at Thule racks (www.thuleracks.com) and see if their solutions sound good. They cost a bit, but not any more than a Honda one would have, and they are of good quality. Good luck.

Can I transport a king-size mattress on top of my car? I live in Toronto, Canada?

Can you drive while a person is hanging onto a roof rack and standing on a step rail?

Basically I was driving and happen to see my friend walking out from school so we picked him up, but I guess he wanted to get a ride to his car by hanging on the roof rack while standing on the step rail…
WHEN all of a sudden an AP comes out of the school and interrogates me, I then find myself in some real deep BS with some really nasty consequences…

Would this be my fault or the person who was outside hanging on the roof rack?
Do I deserve to be punished? Should I have said something?
I had a passenger too, so should he have gotten in trouble or only the driver?

admin answers:

You are the driver, and as such you need to be responsible for the safety of all passengers, even a dipstick stupid enough to hang on the side of a moving vehicle. YOU HAVE NO IDEA, HOW DANGEROUS THAT WAS, AND HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN KILLED EASILY. No trying to lecture, please do not misunderstand, young men and women just like you and dipstick, get killed everyday, all across this country due to making poor choices, had you allowed him to stay there, and moved 20 feet, that is one thing, if he hung off the side of the car for any length of time, that is a whole different set of circumstances. Lets all be glad, no one was hurt. And please, in the future, if you like your friends, ask them to ride on the inside, like most normal people ok?.
You are the driver, you are the responsible party. Your friend hanging on like a little monkey, is guilty as well. Sure hope you learned something and can apply if for the future. I had a friend who let some guy ride in the trunk of a small car, because there were five women inside. They were only going for a short trip, (less than 20 minutes) and had just got on the freeway when BANG! SOME DOPE REAR ENDED THE LEFT QUARTER PANEL OF THE SMALL CAR. Sadly that was where the guys head was, and it was crushed on impact. No one else in the car, was injured. But that one thing, changed many , many lives that day, so realize, its not just you, and that guy stupidly standing outside the vehicle like a monkey. Its also the lives of everyone else around you too, so please be more careful, life can change in the blink of an eye, and one mistake and its OVER, just that fast.
